Sharing Words and Art

The Literature Wales project that was commissioned over fifteen months ago, finally went ahead in Newport today. It was very exciting to be able to meet in person at last, and lovely to be back in The Share Centre.

Francesca Kay is a poet and letterpress printer. You can see her website here. She brought along her portable flatbed press and trays of letters of various fonts. Participants got to mix and match to make their word. The hardest part was remembering to place them back to front so that they printed the right way round!

When everyone had printed their words, they used a variety of materials to make a border around them. I made some to show as examples using collaged materials from magazines, and simple etching and relief prints using things like bubble wrap and styrofoam.

Some of the finished works.
